Annual Conference 2016

Annual Conference was different this year. I helped with the workshop and that was great. This year, I was not a part of the tech desk and that was very strange. Good, but strange. I actually had time to pay attention to what was going on and wasn’t doing 4 jobs at once. It was still slammed packed and still stressful but not like previous years. I had time to rub elbows with other conference goers and be present.

When you are up to your eyeballs in so much, you forget to be present. I didn’t have to monitor several social media accounts, I chose to. I also chose to not be on social media the entire time because I wanted to be present. We get so wrapped up in our phones, we forget to look around and see that we are one of 3000 people that came together to worship and make change. We come together to make a difference and brainstorm how to make difference and bring awareness to missions and services. We come together to praise and lift each other up and be helpful. It was still long days, but nearly as long as previous years and just as enjoyable, if not more so.

One highlight was that after talking to a pastor (who attended the workshop) a few times, we set up an appointment. I will teach her Instagram! Very excited about that!!

Another Virginia United Methodist Conference in the books. As part of the Board of Communications, we held a workshop and dinner at Annual Conference in Roanoke, VA. We had 6 topics and 4, 20 minute sessions. We did speed dating style sessions where the attendees moved from table to table every 20 minutes, picking their top 4 interests. Topics included, Twitter, Facebook, websites, blogging, email marketing and Instagram and Snapchat together. I did the Instagram and Snapchat session. We discussed the rise in popularity in both social media and how Instagram is compatible with other social media where Snapchat is not.

The day before the workshop, USA Today published an article about Snapchat (Divine Gift? Divine Placement?) which I showed the attendees and highlighted key points. I passed out handouts full of great information about Snapchat. I also explained how Snapchat is so different from other social media and we even talked about creating their own filter for their church and/or church function. They asked questions and I answered them. It was so much fun!

I had forgotten how much I enjoy teaching these sessions. It’s time to schedule more training sessions about various social media.

UMAC16

This year UMAC (United Methodist Association of Communicators) was in Portland, Or. It was a quick conference but I still got a lot out of it (not to mention seeing my long time friend after 7 years apart). It was great seeing my other communications friends from around the country and talking shop when we weren’t learning or exploring the city. Thank you Travel Channel and Food Network for telling us such great dining options!! Voodoo Doughnuts (seen on Travel channel) happened several times. We also enjoyed Industrial Cafe and Saloon and Frank’s Noodle House (from Diner’s Drive-ins and Dives).

Spent another Annual Conference at the tech desk, serving with the Methodist church and part of the Board of Communications. Conference this year was back in Roanoke, VA which was fun. The hours were long and stressful. I had extra duties this year on top of everything I already do. Here are a few snap shots from the weekend.

reserved seating
I was asked to draw reserved seating signs on painters tape stuck to the floor.
donut at conference
Sometimes you just need a donut to go with your two computers.

Over 3000 present and thousands more streaming it live. No pressure!

Presenting at VA PAUMCS

Shortly after presenting and participating at UMAC, I turned around and presented again with the Virginia United Methodist Communications Board at PAUMCS (Professional Association of United Methodist Church Secretaries). Many of you may not know, but it’s the secretaries that manage the church’s website, social media, newsletters, and other web based communications. Church secretaries don’t just answer phones and assist clergy. It was fun and we were well received.

Another great year at Virginia United Methodist Church Annual Conference!! Many hours of hard work paid off. I was glad to be a part of the behind the scenes crew for the weekend and sad to see it end, but glad to be home so I could take a much needed nap!!

Yes, that’s me, working two computers and the job really did require two different computers. When I wasn’t at the tech desk, or one of the presenters at the dinner hosted by the Board of Communications, I was sleeping! It was that busy and I loved every minute of it!!

Annual Conference

About this time last year, I was at Annual Conference for VAUMC (#VAUMC14). For those of you who don’t know, the Virginia United Methodist Church has an annual meeting for each Conference. Next week Virginia Conference will meet and to say a lot will go on feels like a bit of an understatement. I will be spending that weekend helping out on the tech desk and will also be presenting at one of the dinners.

The dinner has been organized by another member of the Board of Communications. Five of us from the board will present and we created several different cheat sheets for the attendees to take home. The sheets cover website and hosting, five different social media, blogging, and a best practices sheet. We will divide up into 5 different areas and give 20 minutes talks on our particular topic. After the 20 minutes, the guests rotated to the next area of interest. We will end the dinner with an open panel discussion.

Went I’m not presenting at the dinner, I will be at the tech desk on the floor of the conference doing whatever needs to be done. I’m excited about the event and know that it will be a very long weekend for me. If I don’t come home exhausted, I’ll be shocked!

umac2UMAC, The United Methodist Association of Communicators, is a creative, supportive fellowship of United Methodist communication professionals worldwide. I am a new member for 2013 and have attended their annual conference the past two years. Recently, I was asked to join the planning committee for their 2014 conference. The conference is a 3 day event based on all things communicating from social media, to print copy (newspapers, blogs, magazines, etc.) and more. There are workshops, panel discussions and guest speakers. At the end of the event there is a gala awards ceremony for best video, photojournalism, newspaper layout, magazine articles and more from across Methodism.

Board of Communications

I am excited to tell you about something that I did a few weekends ago. For those of you who don’t know, the Virginia United Methodist Church has an annual meeting for each Conference. A few weekends ago, the Virginia Conference met. I spent that weekend helping out on the tech desk and presented at one of the dinners.

The dinner was organized by another member of the Board of Communications. Five of us from the board presented and we created six different cheat sheets for the attendees to take home. The sheets covered website and hosting, three different social media, blogging, and a best practices sheet. We divided up into 5 different areas and were giving about 20 minutes to share. After the 20 minutes, the guests rotated to the next area of interest. We ended the dinner with an open panel discussion. Lots of compliments were given.

Other than the dinner, I spent the rest of my time at the tech desk on the floor of the conference. I helped with the Conference’s social media and whatever else they needed. It was an exciting and stressful time. We’ve already started talking about next year’s event.
