Annual Conference 2016

Annual Conference was different this year. I helped with the workshop and that was great. This year, I was not a part of the tech desk and that was very strange. Good, but strange. I actually had time to pay attention to what was going on and wasn’t doing 4 jobs at once. It was still slammed packed and still stressful but not like previous years. I had time to rub elbows with other conference goers and be present.

When you are up to your eyeballs in so much, you forget to be present. I didn’t have to monitor several social media accounts, I chose to. I also chose to not be on social media the entire time because I wanted to be present. We get so wrapped up in our phones, we forget to look around and see that we are one of 3000 people that came together to worship and make change. We come together to make a difference and brainstorm how to make difference and bring awareness to missions and services. We come together to praise and lift each other up and be helpful. It was still long days, but nearly as long as previous years and just as enjoyable, if not more so.

One highlight was that after talking to a pastor (who attended the workshop) a few times, we set up an appointment. I will teach her Instagram! Very excited about that!!

#VAUMC16

Another Virginia United Methodist Conference in the books. As part of the Board of Communications, we held a workshop and dinner at Annual Conference in Roanoke, VA. We had 6 topics and 4, 20 minute sessions. We did speed dating style sessions where the attendees moved from table to table every 20 minutes, picking their top 4 interests. Topics included, Twitter, Facebook, websites, blogging, email marketing and Instagram and Snapchat together. I did the Instagram and Snapchat session. We discussed the rise in popularity in both social media and how Instagram is compatible with other social media where Snapchat is not.

The day before the workshop, USA Today published an article about Snapchat (Divine Gift? Divine Placement?) which I showed the attendees and highlighted key points. I passed out handouts full of great information about Snapchat. I also explained how Snapchat is so different from other social media and we even talked about creating their own filter for their church and/or church function. They asked questions and I answered them. It was so much fun!

I had forgotten how much I enjoy teaching these sessions. It’s time to schedule more training sessions about various social media.

Snapchat

Snapchat came out in 2011 and was designed for sex-ting (but the company won’t tell you that). It was made for people to send photos, videos or texts and that weren’t meant to be stored. Access to the messages is removed after 24 hours. If you didn’t read your message within 24 hours, you miss it. You can’t spy on people or cheap like you can in other social media. In order to see what they are doing, you HAVE to follow them and they get notified that you’re following them. It also tells you who viewed your content. If you private message someone via Snapchat, it says when they saw it, if they saw it more than once and if they screenshot your image. YES, you can screen shot images but not download them. If you are posting to your public feed, it has to be live, you can’t upload a photo or video from your phone later.

If you are a business owner and haven’t ventured into Snapchat yet and are on the fence, let me list a few pro’s and con’s. You can decide which is which.

  • It’s an app only. If you don’t have a smartphone or tablet, this isn’t for you. Sorry computer only people. This is not for you.
  • It is commonly used for behind the scenes. Do you want to pull back the curtain on your business? Would people find it interesting?
  • It is another social media. Do you have time for it?
  • It’s demographics are a younger crowd but the 25-40’s are gaining interest. Is this the crowd you’re trying to reach? Is your target market there?
  • Once you pick a Username, you can’t change it. To change the username you have to delete it your account and start over.

Time Is Always Changing

clockTime is always changing. Cells die and divide. Earth is constantly moving and spinning. And so it the moon but with a little wave. Technology and science are forever evolving. Businesses change and grow.

I recently finished reading a book, “#GIRLBOSS” by Sophia Amoruso. She is the founder of a multi-million dollar fashion company called Nasty Gal. The book talks about how she started out on Ebay and made her way up to Forbes 30 under 30 list. It’s a really good read and it’s back on my reading list for later.

Time is always changing and so are you and your business. Sometimes, we are so busy we forget to take a step back and look at our big picture.

  • Where do we want to be in our business?
  • What do we need to do to get there?
  • What is tying up to much time?
  • Can let go of something or hire someone to do tasks better and more efficiently?
  • Are people asking for services no longer offer because of outdated websites or print?

If we aren’t ready to move forward (evolve) we could be left behind, passed over or forgotten. Here is a small list of changes that I finally got around to doing:

  • Updated my business card. I deleted my Tumblr account and the icon and address were still on my card. (Still love Tumblr. See my article for details.) I have a business Instagram account now that they allow access to multiple accounts (Thank you Instagram developers!!).
  • Updated my “About Us” on the website.
  • Deleted Newsletter page - though great ROI, I just didn’t have time for it and struggled with material. Plan to start it again in future.
  • No changes to my services.

When was the last time you reviewed your business? What can you do to evolve?

A Charity Event

The storm came, scared everyone and left. It left behind some amazing clouds. My friend and client helped Manchester High School’s Boosters do a fundraiser of Smoked BBQ. I wasn’t there for very long, but they asked him a ton of questions which he was happy to answer. Three different smokers, including him donated time and energy to help the high school with their fundraiser. He asked me to provide a few photos. Byrd Park in Spring

I had such a great time the other day taking pictures at Brown’s Island that I decided to go out again… to a different local park that required GPS. It was another joyous 30 minute photo session to remind myself why I enjoy photography so much.

Here’s another round of afternoon, spring time photos of beautiful blooming trees in historical Byrd Park in Richmond, VA.

Fun Photography Outing

As someone who really enjoys photography, photography as a career or your passion, can lose its excitement. It’s important to find a one to two hour window where you can go out and just shoot. In outdoor photography, weather plays an important roll which is why I was excited when I found an opportunity to go to Brown’s Island for the blooming trees. It was a beautiful overcast day. When I had taken all the photos I wanted was when a few rain drops began to fall.

It’s good to get in a little camera time without any pressure. It helps to mix things up, try new things and keep the process fun. It can be hard to find that window, but when the weather is right, it is important to go out there and have a good time! Take an little adventure. Explore somewhere new or visit a place that you haven’t been to in a long time (like Brown’s Island or Bell’s Isle).

Not only did I enjoy the process, but I also took in the beauty of the blooming trees, the sound of the river, ducks and even the train. The fresh air (thank you allergy meds!) and breeze was wonderful. The wind blew some pedals off the trees which made me smile (scenes from the “Twilight” series popped in my head). This photo session may have lasted only 30 minutes but it was well worth it and I got some beautiful shots from it. In fact, I enjoyed it enough that the following day, I visited another park and did another session. Be on the look out for those!

Where are some of your favorite places to shoot?
