Presenting at VA PAUMCS
Shortly after presenting and participating at UMAC, I turned around and presented again with the Virginia United Methodist Communications Board at PAUMCS (Professional Association of United Methodist Church Secretaries). Many of you may not know, but it’s the secretaries that manage the church’s website, social media, newsletters, and other web based communications. Church secretaries don’t just answer phones and assist clergy. It was fun and we were well received.

Speaking in Savannah
If you keep up with me, then you know I was invited to run a workshop at a conference in Savannah, GA. I was honored and excited to do so. I presented the president of the organization with two possible topics. They liked both options so much, I ended up doing both. It was exciting and stressful.
I’m a huge fan of efficient packing but this trip did not allow for that. I had to take a projector, handouts, pens, and a bunch of other items to make sure I had all I needed for back to back workshops. I don’t think I’ve ever packed so much for such a short trip (for just 4 days)!!
I’d love to show you photos of me presenting, but I don’t have any. 🙁 But the reports I heard were positive and people walked away learning something!!

Latest Facebook Page Training
Earlier this month, I did another Facebook Page Training. The power point was updated as well as the handout and I was ready to roll. I had two ladies that didn’t have a page started which was a first. I took the time to get them started and walk through the whole set up process and then moved on from there. It was great teaching the ladies everything from the ground up. They said they learned a lot and I’m looking forward to watching their progress.
Another class will be coming again soon and I will keep you posted on the dates.

Let’s Put Down Our Phones
This YouTube video speaks volumes. Even though I deal a lot of with Social Media and electronics, I really do value and enjoy my Face to Face meetings (and occasional power outages). I too am guilty of being too attached to small electronic devices. We all need to unplug for a little while.

Latest News from Pinterest
Got an email this morning from Pinterest. If you don’t get their email but are pinners, then you might still want to read this:
Back in May, we started working with a small group of advertisers to test Promoted Pins in the U.S. Our plan now is to make Promoted Pins more relevant to Pinners and help advertisers understand how their ads impact their business. On October 19, 2014, we’ll make a few updates to our Privacy Policy to explain those plans.
If you don’t want us to use info from advertisers to personalize the Promoted Pins you see, you can change your account settings via your web browser. We’ll continue to support Do Not Track for personalization on Pinterest, as well.
If you’d like, you can get a preview of the Privacy Policy updates that’ll roll out on October 19. To learn more about the tools we’re building for advertisers and how we’ll tailor Promoted Pins, check out our Help Center.

Starting a movement
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has taken off like a wild fire that was fed gasoline. The challenge has raised millions of dollars for research and has also raised awareness for this awful disease.
Every wonder how a movement like that is created or how something goes viral? This TED Talks video does a great job of explaining it so you can create a movement of your own.

The New Foursquare
I used the old Foursquare for fun. Then I started using it for business. I enjoyed it. I saw new places my “friends” checked in to, used it for Memory Lane, I was rewarded with discounts and even occasionally, became a “Mayor”! My favorite were the badges! Check in to several different bakeries and get bakery badges, check in to a lot of coffee shops and get coffee badges, and check in to a bunch of airports and get traveler badges!! My favorite was the surprise badge! I got one while shopping in New York City. It was a Fashion Week badge!! It was silly but fun and exciting. The competitive types, you could rack up points for the check ins for checking in a lot throughout the day. New places earned more points.
For some reason, the makers of Foursquare decided that they needed to change things drastically so you no longer can check in with the Foursquare app. You must now download another other app, called Swarm (the name by the way does not go ever well with me because I am not a fan of bees).
The once popular app is now getting uninstalled by many former fans and are not moving on to Swarm. I am NOT going to Swarm, because I’m really not interested in downloading yet another app and setting up yet another account when I already had an account with a program that I liked, used and was fun!
I think that if they had done the updates and kept the check in part of the app with Foursquare, people’s reactions would be different. Most people aren’t a fan of change, but this goes beyond change to what many may consider destruction. Did the developers of Swarm and Foursquare shoot themselves in the foot? We’ll see!!
