Moving On..

The last time I revamped this website, I decided I needed to also update my blog platform. I went from the simple, easy and adored, Tumblr to WordPress. I still LOVE Tumblr, but I needed something more substantial and WordPress is just that. I kept up with both for awhile. It was a bit of effort I admit, but I wasn’t ready to let go of Tumblr. It was my first blog! I was attached.

With the new year, all business owners reevaluate things. What can we streamline? What do we need to improve? What is holding us back?

This year, I decided to streamline things and let go of my Tumblr account. As much as I hated ending my business relationship with Tumblr, it needed to be done. I gave it a good effort!! I got NO business from it and that’s ok. Time to move on.

Staying true to my belief that Social Media should not be abandoned, I decided it was time to close that account. I deleted it and all it’s posts. I’m ok with that. I had already transferred all the posts over here to this blog.

I still think Tumblr is great and I will continue to recommend it to clients who aren’t very tech savvy; where WordPress may be overwhelming. I will also continue to use it for my hobbies.

If it’s not working for you, then move on. Be honest. You can’t try something for just a few weeks. Don’t just abandon it. Close it down, completely. DELETE it. Then make sure you disconnect all your connections to it; buttons, links etc.

Should You Blog?

You hear people all the time talking about a blog they read or how they are starting a blog. Have you considered starting one of your own? Businesses write blogs all the time and for good reason. People love free advice and learning new things, it helps with Search Engine Optimization (showing up on Google/Yahoo/Bing/etc. searches) and is another way to cast that net (web) to drive more traffic to your site (potentially, more business).

There is a time commitment involved and it’s up to you as to how much time you or your staff want/can put into it. As long as posting is consistent it doesn’t matter if you post daily, weekly or monthly. The posts don’t need to be long. They can be as short as a paragraph as long as it’s well structured and has a point.

Abandoned Social Media

We’ve all done it. We tried a new social media because it seems to be all the rage, but when it came down to it, it’s just not you. It’s too time consuming, it’s too hard to figure out, or it keeps changing everything around frustrating you, so you stop using it.

logosWell, if you do that for your personal life, fine. In business, that is not a great move. If you have links on your print items, website, where ever (to your say a Twitter account) and people go there and see that you haven’t posted or responded to anything in 6 months or longer, they are going to tilt their head your company or even you. No, it is not a requirement to post 20 times a day on everything. Not all social medias are right for everyone. I have a client that I’ve advised several times that Twitter is not right for him yet. He’s way too busy, rarely around a computer and he likes his phone simple. Tumblr was a better option.

I’m not telling you not to try something. Try it for awhile before adding it to print items or website. If it doesn’t work for you or you don’t like it, close down that account. Please don’t ignore that account and leave it in limbo.

If you aren’t sure how to use a particular social media, you can give me a call. I will be happy to sit down with you and teach you a few time saving steps and better social media practices.

Facebook-Instagram Merger

reblogged courtenaybird

“Before Instagram, Facebook was used exclusively to share content - it didn’t provide tools to actually create content (with the exception of typed status updates). It left creation to others - notably Zynga for games, native camera applications for photos, and record labels/Spotify for music. The Instagram acquisition signals Facebook’s recognition that it is important to have a hand in the creation of content… I may spend two minutes shooting and reshooting a photo that my wife is finally happy with, but only four seconds posting that photo to Facebook.”

  • 2.3 million posts per hour
  • 385 million posts per week
  • 1.65 billion posts per month
  • 20 billion posts per year

Tumblr’s massive growth in 2011 continues:

  • Tumblr went from 12 to 41 million blogs in 2011 (29 million added)
  • Tumblr users created more than 13 billion blog posts in 2011
  • The total number of posts on Tumblr grew by 500%

Social Media Training!

I just took the best social media class ever!! A networking business associate and client of mine asked me to take this class in her place. She thought that not only could I learn from it for my business, and I could pass the information on to her in a more “chewable” fashion.

I thought I knew quite a bit about social media, but boy was I wrong!! There is so much more out there!! Most everyone knows about Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube, but did you know about HootSuite, Vimeo, Delicious or how to use Google Docs to create a survey for your company? I use Google Docs, for spread sheets, coding cheat sheet, etc. but had NO idea that I could create a survey and that it would tally the results!! How cool is that?

How about how to shorten url’s by using bit.ly or tinyurl.com when referencing other web items? The trainer of the class introduced us to Tumblr and instead of having a huge blog that gives the impression of needing to write long articles, this does not!! Quick, easy and user-friendly is quite an understatement!!
