How I KonMari-ed Facebook

August 1, 2019 Facebook 0

The KonMari Method is a tidying and purging process created by Marie Kondo. She has the best selling book called “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up“, a YouTube channel, and a series on Netflix called “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo”. I have enjoyed all of them thoroughly, several times. Her tidying method focuses on the home. I have used her techniques in my home and modified them for my business and social media.

Facebook is so full and busy and cluttered. It used to be happy and fun and business approved! Then Facebook changed. Everyone spouting their political beliefs and being ugly to one another. I watched 2 lovely ladies at my church become not friends because of politics and Facebook. Not cool people. Not cool. Facebook became more ads than friend’s updates… With the algorithms, the posts you like and comment on and pulls more of that type of content into your newsfeed. With that said, I took the time to do a handful of tricks to clean up and clear up my feed. Here is what I did…

Friends List

Not everyone on Facebook needs to be your friend. That includes family. If you are not on team cousin Sandy because she hates puppies and thinks anyone living under 4,000 square feet is beneath her, while you have 3 dogs and dream of owning a tiny house, then you don’t have to be friends with her (or follow her). Clear out your friends list. Just because you went to elementary school together doesn’t mean you need to be friends. Let them go. It’s kinda nice, honestly. I deleted a friends mom who posted an image of an aborted baby. No joke. The actual image crossed the line. I’m out! Remove “friends” that you had just for a game (we’ve all done it). If they “don’t bring you joy” kiss them a lovely farewell.

Groups

I just spent 2 webinars (split-screen) deleting 2 groups that I created and removed myself from 8 other groups. I wasn’t able to keep up with one group and the other group hadn’t been used in over a year.

With Facebook’s new changes, groups are slowing visibility now too. When I got notifications from all groups I could look and see if it was of interest. Well, due to the laundry list of changes that Facebook put out, I don’t get notifications on many groups that included people commenting on my posts and comments. So now I look like a butt not responding to them.

I reviewed my ever-growing list of groups and removed myself from the groups that had not been active in a year or more. Why bother, you ask? Because doing this will make it easier for me to get to the groups I am still actively involved in. It cleans up the left side of the computer screen and streamlines future suggestions of groups that Facebook recommends.

To delete a group you must be the creator and admin. All members need to be removed. All admins need to be demoted to regular member and then removed. The very last two steps are: remove yourself as admin and then leave the group. NOTE: remove yourself last or you can’t delete the group. Facebook automatically deletes groups with 0 members!

Newsfeed

There was a point when someone would share something and you could click on the right side of the comment and click “I do not want to see this”. Facebook would then ask why and I would click “I do not wish to see anything from (news source)”. I was able to, over time, remove just about any news source so even if my BFF posted about XYZ news article, I didn’t see it. It has been amazing!!

There are tons of studies out there that say avoiding news is good for you. If we are truly honest, we all know horrible things happen all the time. Politicians do dumb things. Animal cruelty is a real thing. People are getting shot or hit by cars all the time. We know lots of unpleasant stats and they don’t bring us joy. Being bombarded by the news brings us down. Take the time to make your newsfeed a happy place. Click “I do not want to see this”. Facebook will get the message and adjust its algorithm for you. YAY for puppies and Fae magic wielders!

Miscellaneous

Other items that can also be purged are as follows:

  • Games - have you quit playing some games? Why not delete them and remove their access to your account. *Privacy*
  • Apps and Websites - are you no longer using apps or websites? Why not delete them and remove their access to your account. *Privacy*
  • Business Integrations - are you no longer using some of the business integration apps? Why not delete them and remove their access to your account. *Privacy*
  • Pages - which pages no longer suite you or have gone out of business

If you have followed all the steps above, then congratulations!! I’m sure you have noticed that your Facebook feed is a happier and brighter place to be. You might have even noticed that you can be more focused while on there. If you want to read more about Facebook tips, click here.
