A Day of Photos

August 16, 2018 Blogging Development Product Photography Websites 1

There has been something that I have wanted to do for a while and have struggled to find the time or nerve to do it. I wanted photos of myself. I wanted photos for my website and social media accounts. Well, I finally got the nerve, so during my slow season, I made it happen. I wanted honest photos of me in local places. So I created my plan and to-do list.

  • Upgrade/Update wardrobe
  • Schedule hair and eyebrow appointment
  • Buy a proper bra
  • Create a Pinterest idea board
  • Pick locations
  • Select better shoe choice (no sneakers)
  • Schedule dates for shoots
  • Get approval from coffee shops

Outfits

With a strict budget, I chose to keep my outfits true to me, but a little nicer. Everything I wore in the photos was from my existing wardrobe. I didn’t go “costume” shopping. My personal philosophy is: “Don’t waste time shopping for the perfect outfit. Most likely you already have it in your closet.” I don’t normally wear jewelry, so putting on a few pieces that I already own, took my look up a notch. While I was at it, I did a wardrobe upgrade by removing my worn out and poor fitting pieces.

My go-to is sneakers. But for the photoshoot, a nicer shoe is a must. Again, I kept it true to me and used my comfy yet nicer shoes from my closet. Maybe a little cleaning or polish was all that was needed. K.I.S.S.

If a painter was doing this photoshoot for their site, I would recommend an ironed, paint-free shirt and nice pants (also ironed and paint free, unless it’s jeans. I don’t recommend ironing jeans).

The Perfect Location

I did not scout for locations. I picked local coffee shops that have great vibes and looks and where I meet clients anyway. Both are convenient locations with great natural lighting. The coffee shops also have a variety of seating options which I enjoy and create different settings. Some days a table is good, but if I’m there between meetings or want a change of scene, then I enjoy a big fluffy chair. I wanted to reflect that in these images.

Grooming

Because I’m growing my hair out from a pixie cut, I was looking pretty rough. I put on my to-do list to update my lack of hair cut and got my eyebrows cleaned up too.

I would recommend a clean shave or good trim for the fellas. Ladies, get cut and color touchups. If mani-pedi is your thing, then schedule that too. I do not recommend extreme makeovers.

Picking the Photographer

When I started this project, I thought I would get my husband to take the photos. I would set up the camera and direct him and then sit down to pose. My friend, Sarah Kane offered to help me with this project. Normally, Sarah does infant and maternity photography, so she wasn’t on my radar. When she offered to help me, I was delighted! It was worth the price to know that a skilled and talented photographer was behind the camera. My husband is not. At all. Taking that off my plate so I could focus on everything else was an enormous help. It was also helpful to have a Pinterest board which we referred to a few times to make sure we got all the images I wanted.
