Social Media - Etiquette

There have been many news reports and articles written about people that are fired or not hired because of things they have written on the internet. Many different news channels have discussed whether or not it is ethical for Employers to look at your Facebook and other social media accounts to get a sneak peek into your personal life and other connections. It has been outlawed in many areas that employers can not ask for your passwords but that won’t stop them from looking publicly!!

Make sure your privacy settings are set correctly. Facebook LOVES to change the rules regularly. When in doubt, don’t post it!! If it’s slightly questionable and you’re job hunting, it may be best to not post it. Same rules apply to Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and etc…

Here are a list of Mashable articles that may interest you and go into more detail:

Really? Timeline?? UGH!

So, if you are like Michelle and are being forced into the Timeline format in Facebook, you are probably confused and frustrated. It seems to be a reoccurring theme to change some of your settings, primarily who can view your posts. Here is how you find out who is seeing your posts!! Note the circled areas. The people icon means that your friends can see the post. If it is a STAR, then ONLY your “closest friends” will see the post. If you have no one in your closest friend list, then no one sees it. To change the existing posts (the smaller circle) that may not be displaying to your friends, hover over the friend icon until the tiny arrow shows up to the right. Click on that and change your preference.

You can change your setting permanently (until Facebook decides to change it for you… again). Click on the tiny arrow next to “Home”. Go down to “Privacy settings” and click on it..

Once in “Privacy Settings” click on on “Friends”. Friends well allow everyone you are friends with to to see what your post. Public means that EVERYONE (even complete strangers) can see your post. I only recommend that setting for your name, profile photo, and maybe your education (if you want to connect to your old school mates. If you don’t care about your old school mates, then keep that private too!!

Simplifying Social Media

Social Media can be overwhelming. you can simplifying them (Twitter, Facebook and Linked-In) by using a tool such as HootSuite.

The great thing with HootSuite is that you can type out a single post and that 1 post can be posted in multiple locations. 2nd: you can create posts in advance. Spend an evening writing 3,4,100 posts, walk away and poof - they appear over the next several days, week or month!! 3rd: they have videos - lots of videos - that help you learn how to use it. 4th: It’s FREE if you use 5 “feeds” or less.

There are other sites out there that will do the same thing. HootSuite is the one that has been recommended to me by many other social savvy people.

Facebook: One key thing that seems to be skipped over a lot is… If you are on your PAGE as your PAGE, click on the the home icon at the top of the site. That is the “wall feed” for your BUSINESS, not the “stupid feed” as one of my clients likes to call it otherwise known as your profile wall. Using your business PAGE to like, comment and share other pages’ content, will increase your page’s presence and potentially getting you more likes. NOTE: the only pages that you will see while doing this will be the pages that your PAGE “likes”.

To “like” a page by your business, go to that page and click on the tiny arrow next to the “like” and” Message” button. Click on the tiny arrow and select “Add to My Page’s Favorites”. Also, if you are still in Facebook as your page, you search for the pages you want to like and click the like button.

Pinterest is great for business too - as long as you use for more than business!! Think of Pinterest as visual bookmarks that you can get to from ANY computer (that also posts to Facebook (personal) and Twitter). My wedding photographer friend, David Abel does a beautiful of mixing it up.

Twitter is more involved than the other previously mentioned medias, however it is also a great place to find information related to your business. Start slow to get the hang of it and once you learn how to navigate the “jungle”, grow. Keep your business and personal accounts separate. Follow related or similar companies and inspirational people. If you are a Mary Kay consultant, why not follow Bobby Brown and other famous make-up artists. I follow Dave Ramsey - talk about a smart cookie!! HootSuite is great for helping to tame the beast of Twitter. Talk to me if you want to learn more. NOTE: Don’t feel bad about “unfollowing” someone on Twitter. Some post WAY too much and belong in Twitter jail (which is a real thing)!!

Facebook-Instagram Merger

reblogged courtenaybird

“Before Instagram, Facebook was used exclusively to share content - it didn’t provide tools to actually create content (with the exception of typed status updates). It left creation to others - notably Zynga for games, native camera applications for photos, and record labels/Spotify for music. The Instagram acquisition signals Facebook’s recognition that it is important to have a hand in the creation of content… I may spend two minutes shooting and reshooting a photo that my wife is finally happy with, but only four seconds posting that photo to Facebook.”

Linking Properly

When having links on your website, you want them, to most importantly, be correct! If you are trying to show your viewers/readers/customers a YouTube video, you want them to see it, otherwise, why did you send them there? News feeds or articles, other people’s videos, etc. have a tendency to change, make sure you have a back up, just in case.

If you do a lot with YouTube or Vimeo, it is best to link to the “channel” by using the proper icon. If you want a particular video displayed, then why not embed the video some where on the site. Have it on your channel, so you know it will always work.

If you are a commercial and residential painter and you want your services page to have an example of you doing a faux finish, then post the video or specific link to that video on the page it relates to.

People expect simple things. Social icons should go to the social medias that the icon represents not just to a video. Keeping your site to high standards will help your site be more user friendly and will have more repeat visitors.

Creating Facebook Friend Lists

There are many reason for putting your Facebook friends into lists. Say you have some people from your church or from high school that you were pleasant with but you don’t want them knowing all your business. Maybe you have a few coworkers that you would rather not share your vacation photos with. Maybe you only want your closest friends and family to see your children’s photos. You can create an album and have the privacy setting so that only your family can see it or have it blocked so many of your “pleasantry” friends can’t.

I personally like lists because when I create events I can select the a list of friends and it speeds up the invite process. Instead of scrolling through all of my friends and family, I can select my networking list and invite those friends for a networking event. This way, I don’t invite the wrong people or forget to add someone.

To create the lists, click on “Account”, click on “Edit Friends” and to create a list, look to the right for the “+Create a List” button. A window will pop up for you to start selecting people and create a title for your new list. Once you hit complete, you can adjust the list whenever by clicking on the name of group which is now appearing on the left of the screen. To add more friends to the list, you can hover over your friend’s name, click on “edit list” and select the group. People can be in more than one group.

Create as many lists as you want.

To edit your album’s privacy, each album needs to be done separately. Go to your profile page, click on photos, get to the desired album and then click on “edit album”. A window will pop up and at the bottom is the privacy of your choosing. To keep it from a group of people or visible only to a small group of people, click on customize. For the elite, click the drop down menu for “specify people” and add the name of the list you want to see the album. This affects this album only, not all of your photos!! If you want only a few to not see it, then ad the list name to the “hide this from” section. This only affects this album, not all photos!!

Facebook is Changing

Facebook has made a lot of changes lately. Some are new and some not so new but are just now being discovered by others. Galleries have changed, wall postings are slightly different and more.

Facebook started making its own pages for company names - even if they have a company page already. Some of you can claim the page as your own and sometimes you cannot (still working on why not). And speaking of pages, they have updated the layouts. They look more like profiles now. Updated pages moved the tabs from across the top to now being listed on the left. The admin section is now to the right instead of to the left and many other noticeable changes.

Privacy setting have been a huge conversation for many people. I see warnings from friends that are still going around more than a year later for a setting that Facebook changed. If you are curious about privacy settings, ASK!! Read the help section and keep on top of things. Not having your privacy settings set high enough means that your information is a open book, literally - person pictures you may not want to be seen by your boss or potential employer!! Have them set too high and even your best friend won’t be able to find you.

To adjust your privacy setting click on account - Privacy settings. Take your time, read carefully and adjust as needed. Do what makes you comfortable. Note: Keep in mind that all the games you play, “liked” artists, musicians, etc and can see your information as well.

Did you know you can create lists! As in putting your friends into lists/categories. If you have business associates that you would prefer NOT see pictures of your vacation in Bahamas or pictures of your children (or grandchildren), you can put them in a list and set your settings so that list can’t see said items. To create a list, go to Account - Edit friends - (top right) - click “Create a List”. Give it a title and start adding away! Lists are awesome! It’s a fast way to create a mailing list, invite list, block certain information from a list, etc..

To put restrictions on a gallery, you need to click on the specific album, click on “edit Album info” and change the privacy setting to that album. Note: This is for the particular album and not ALL albums.
