Google Analytics - Updated

I haven’t written on this subject yet, because I wanted to be able to explain things and know what I was talking about before confusing you more or fumbling around.

If you haven’t noticed already, Google Analytics did change their layout and how to find everything you are looking for. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems more complicated than before. The good news is, everything you need is on the left column menu - the question is -where!

The main analytic page no longer has the over all summary that shows you all charts and graphs of things like what browsers people are using, what key wards are people typing in to find you and so on. No more clicking on graphs and diagrams to get to the information you want.

The reading of the stats is still the same. Bigger the number the better, unless you are talking about bounce rate. That should be a golf score - in the 20′s and you are Tiger Woods in his prime.

The way to find the information you are looking for is very different.

Key Words: When looking for what people are typing in to find you, go under “Traffic Sources”, click on “Search”, the click on “Organic”. If you have PPC services, then look under “Paid”.

Traffic: It see where your traffic is coming from (Google, Emails, Facebook, etc), click on “Traffic Sources”, “Sources” and and of the three choices below - “All Traffic”, “Direct” or “Referrals”.

Yellow Pages

I’ve been saying for years. More and more people are turning to the Web. Look how much smaller the phone book is compared to previous years!! Need and reason? They were just delivered around here a few weeks ago. Next time the recycling is out, look at how many phone books land in the bend. Did you keep yours or recycle it?

Guaranteed #1 on Search Engines

If you ever get an email from a company telling you they can Guarantee #1 on Google, Bing, or any other search engine, don’t fall for it! This is not Search Engine Optimization (SEO), it is Paid Ads they are guaranteeing. This means you, the client, pay the most to have the top spot and are competing with other companies who have been guaranteed the same spot. It’s like a battle of the finances - who can pay the most for the top spot. The winner? The Paid Ad Company!

Pay-per-Clicks that promise a certain number of clicks aren’t much better. Some companies have been known to have people in a back room, clicking on YOUR ADS to make the “guaranteed quota”!

True story time…
My husband got a sofa from his aunt and some how the feet didn’t come with the couch. I went online looking for “sofa feet”, “couch feet”, “sofa legs”, and even found the company name that specializes in creating designer feet just to find a way to get the couch off the floor. Well, sofa feet, etc. aren’t very popular so I resorted to clicking on the paid ads and pay-per-clicks. Two of the pay-per-clicks sent me to baby items and diapers. I am still trying to figure out how looking for “sofa feet” and diapers are related! This is why I am not a fan of Paid Ads and Pay-Per-Clicks.

Improving SEO

Specialists agree, improving your rankings when searched includes updating your content. If you build your site and never change its content, it won’t do nearly as well as those who go into their site and adjust the content from time to time. It could be as simple as updating your gallery (or swapping out your not so good photos for better ones), including testimonials strategically throughout the site, adding new pages (service/product specific) to the website, or rewriting your content all together. Not sure what to add? If the ideas above aren’t enough, or you’ve done all those already, you can still talk to your Web designer or SEO specialist. You can also ask a few random friends or clients what they would be interested in seeing on your website.

Most importantly, make the new content quality content that is related to your products and services not just words taking up more space. It needs to be relevant.

As an SEO specialist, I do ask my clients from time to time to provide me with some new details for their site. After all, my client knows his/her business way better than I do!!

How to set up Google Analytics

To set up the account, it requires a Google account. Google accounts include Gmail, YouTube, Picasa and more. If you don’t have an account already you click on the “sign in” button on the top right of www.google.com and click on “create an account now” below the sign in section and follow the instructions.

Now that, that is set up, we can set up the analytics account. Back on the main page, click on “business solutions” Find “Analytics” (it has a small icon of a graph). Depending on which browser you use depends on the location of the link. Firefox is center column, 2 down. Chrome is on the left column.

Now you get to set up another account. The link is very small underneath the huge Access Analytics button. Google will then give you step by step instructions for setting up the code. You should end up on a page that looks like this.

Copy this coding and send it to your web designer. The coding needs to be added before the </head> tag in the back end of the website. It should be added to all pages that you want tracked.

24 hours after it is installed correctly you will get results. Just log back into the Google account, click on the business solutions, go to analytics click on view report and off you go!!

Enjoy and watch the results come in!!

Gathering emails for newsletters

Sure! You want to get your email newsletter contact list to grow, but how? There are good ways to gather email addresses and bad ways. Being listed or marked as spam is bad. Very bad. We all hate spam and I’m sure the last thing you want to do is to hurt your business or be dropped from your email marketing provider. If you are tagged too many times as spam, that could become a reality.

There are service providers out there that will sell you a list of emails. This is a waste of money most of the time. The people on the list may not be interested in your products or services are the email addresses don’t belong to real people. Sure you get a ton of emails, but do they want your information?

I personally can’t stand getting newsletters from strangers, especially if I have no idea how they got my address! Just because Joe gave you his business card with his email on it, does not mean you have permission to add him to your email newsletter list. I’m a Web person - I really don’t care that some real estate company is recruiting agents or is looking for listings. Don’t want it- please don’t sign me up. :)

The best way to go about collecting addresses for your newsletters is by asking people directly. If you belong to a networking group, ask the other members; don’t just sign them up. If you are part of a trade show, have a booth at a state fair, or hosting an event have a sign up sheet available. You’d be surprised at the number of emails you will get. Most email marketing companies have a sign-up form that can be added to your website and Facebook pages. You could do an incentive for your current recipients to help spread the word and share your newsletter (coupons, a prize, a special personalized thank you, etc.). Getting the idea? It’s better to grow slowly than to have a host of strangers irritated with your company, wouldn’t you agree?
