Going Live

Facebook live using a smartphone.
These days “going live” means many things. From finalizing a website and have it go live for the world to see to actually going live on social media. Both require forethought and planning. You want the website to look nice, have correct content and function properly. When going live on social media, you want to a game plan:
- what topic you’ll discuss
- if you need props of any kind
- how you want to receive questions and comments while streaming
Planning helps you to look and feel more organized and professional. Sitting close to the camera and staring at the screen saying “yeah”, “uh huh” and laughing or rolling your eyes doesn’t tell the onlooker who you are responding to or which question you are answering. Practice a few times (not on your business account) to get more comfortable in front of the camera. Practice in front of a mirror, or video camera. Think about having another person with you to screen the comments and read the more popular or relevant questions out loud for you to answer.
To increase your viewers for your live feed, announce it! Create an event and invite people on Facebook. Facebook will send notifications to remind the invited to the event. Facebook live videos can last if you post it in your feed. It would be a good idea to save the video on your smartphone or tablet so you can upload it to YouTube. Uploading it to YouTube will allow you to broaden your reach.
This is also a good idea for going live on Instagram. When going live on Instagram, it doesn’t stay like it can of Facebook. If people wanted to see your Live session but forgot and couldn’t make it, saving the live video and posting it on YouTube will allow you to use it again and preserve your work.
To announce your live sessions, create several posts about it in advance. Send out a newsletter to let people know about it and create an event using a free program like E-vite.
My idea for a live session is “Snow Day Q&A” (No stealing!). We didn’t have a snow day after I thought up my genius idea. But be on the lookout for it next winter! “Power Out Talk it out” would probably not be ideal. The whole lack of power would deter people wanting to waste precious battery juice or data on potentially long video.
