Common Facebook Mistakes

For years now, I have taught businesses how to use Facebook Pages for business. It is not the same as using it for pleasure at all!
Here is my list of quick Myths and No-Nos that I’d like to clarify.
MYTH: I need a create a separate account from my personal Facebook account to make a business page.
Fact: You only ever need 1 (ONE) account to do everything on Facebook. Whether creating a business page for a large organization or a page for a small hobby, everything starts with your original Facebook account. This keeps things clean and tidy. If your page needs multiple admins, then in the Page’s settings, under “Page Roles” add more admins, editors, moderators and whatever. There is no need to create yet another account and share your Facebook login with anyone. If people need to move, then go back in to “Page Roles” and delete them!
MYTH: But I want to keep my personal Facebook account and business separate.
Fact: They are. (Ok. This is when I lose people so bear with me.) From the computer (yes, it makes a difference and is a whole different bag of worms from the app), when you are on the page, you will see your page profile icon next to whatever it is you are doing. You are acting as the business. Those who follow or like your page will not see when you post baby photos and political views in your personal world. Just be aware of which account you are in and when in doubt, don’t share!

If you want your friends to see your page’s posts then:
- Share it on your personal account
- Ask your friends to like your page
- Or do both
No-No: Using a personal profile as a business account.
If you can “Add Friend” to a business, then it is set up as a profile, not a page. Facebook frowns upon this. Profiles are “Add Friend”. Business is “Like”. That is the most basic way I can explain it. If your business is set up to “Add Friend” then you need to change it to your personal account and then create your page. Kate Carpenter Design did it right! Good job, Kate!
